Fun with Oatmeal

One of the activities Nathan's SLP (Speech & Language Pathologist) suggested the last time she visited, was to make a homemade sand box - or use rice or oatmeal if I had that instead. And hide his toys in it, letting him dig to find them. The idea was to help him with fine motor skills, and help overcome his dislike of touching things that would make him dirty. I didn't think Nathan would have a problem touching any of those things - unless they were wet. I can imagine he'd not like sitcky rice or gooey oatmeal, or even wet sand. But we started with one of the SLPs suggestions - dry oatmeal.

I have plenty of oatmeal... we got 11 large canisters from Target a few weeks ago for free after coupons ;-)  AND oatmeal is easily edible if/when Faith chose to stick it in her mouth. So, today we got a large rubbermaid container out. And poured in it a canister of dry, old fashioned oatmeal. I hid some toys in it. Then we hid puzzle pieces. And eventually we ended up just using plastic cups to play in it.

It was a great deal of fun for everyone! Nathan loved it. Faith loved it. And everyone was playing together happily - and learning at the same time!  And then... I turned my back...

...just for a second... and returned to this:

One VERY messy playroom. And two VERY happy toddlers!

And one COMPLETELY empty rubbermaid container!

At least everyone had fun.
And, for once, my vaccum got to taste something besides goldfish crackers & cheerios.

It's a good thing I have a good vaccum.
And a good sense of humor ;-)

Next time, we'll take the oatmeal outside.
