Before we moved to Texas, we saw a show on the Food Network called "Man vs. Food." The host had an episode all about San Antonio - we've already checked out the giant pizzas and cinnamon rolls highlighted in that show. But there was another show about Austin's giant donuts. There's a little bakery north of Austin called Round Rock Donuts. In the town of Round Rock, ironically ;-)
Friday morning, after dropping Jacob off at his conference center, we headed straight to Round Rock. We had to try those donuts!
Although the bakery is pretty, it's small. And they don't offer a very large variety of baked items. A few pies. A few cakes. Four types of cake donuts. And two types of regular donuts. And a few other things like apple fritters and fried cinnamon rolls. That's it. But what they do, they do well!!
Only a half dozen people, or so, could fit comfortably in the front of the bakery. Guess that's part of the reason why the drive thru line practically wrapped around into the church parking lot next door! I'll bet it does if you go by earlier in the morning than we were! Since there was no place to sit inside, we picked our donuts and we sat outside to enjoy them.
Nathan selected the chocolate iced donut.
Faith and I each got the glazed donut.
She ate her's funny - but she's not use to me giving her something big, and not cut up, to eat.
They gave us donuts from fresh out of the kitchen - not from the display. They were warm. And gooey. Melted in our mouths. Like a Krispy Kreme, but lots better. They weren't quite as sweet as a KK (but still were sweet). And they were more substantial than a KK, too. Oh yeah... and they're yellow! An orangish yellow color. Both the glaze and inside of the donut.
And warm + gooey + orange + chocolate + yummy = MESSY!
Faith only ate 2 bites of her's, though. Soon her screaming began again - the same screams from yesterday. I gave her medicine and tried to calm her down. But I'm now convinced it was just the fact that that she was tired of that darn car seat.
She screamed all the way to the children's museum, which was our next stop of the day. But once we arrived, she was fine again. I'll post pics from the children's museum tomorrow.
Back to the donuts.... We didn't just get 3 donuts for ourselves at Round Rock Donuts. No, we were there for the Texas Sized monster donut!
Jacob just happened to have a measuring tape in the truck.
See?? It was monsterous alright!
We brought it with us that evening to Jacob's aunt's house - where we met up with his sister, grandparents, and other family & friends. (I'll post pics from that later, too). But we did take pictures of the kids with the donut before it was devoured:
So, now we've experienced all the "big foods" we know about in our area.
We need some new and fun things - food or not - to explore.
Got any ideas for us??
