Thanksgiving 2011

Yesterday we celebrated Thanksgiving with another family from our church. Their extended family also lives hours (ok, days) away. And they're good friends of ours, so it was great to have another family to share Thanksgiving with!

We attempted to take a Christmas card photo for them.
Cute family, right? :)

Our friends brought the turkey. It was Dan's first attempt at cooking a turkey - he'd been watching Alton Brown on the food network and was inspired to brine and cook the turkey. I think he watched the turkey episode a dozen times to be sure it got it all right. It looked good, that's for sure. But he let Jacob do the carving.

And then there was a surprise that Alton would have been ashamed of... but us?? We just laughed!! What was it that got everyone laughing???

Can you see? Sorry the flash kind of whited it out... It's a little present inside the turkey... a baggie of innards. Yum. Poor Dan was so embarassed - but he was a great sport! And I showed him the GIANT burn hole on my kitchen floor to remind him that he was among friends - friends that make silly & often stupid mistakes in the kitchen, too - so we laugh WITH you Dan, not at you ;-)

All the yummy food. I was proud to be able to say that I made it all from scratch (well... can you still call it "from scratch" when you use a can of soup here and a can of pumpkin there?) Of course, I didn't make the turkey and Breanna & Dan brought some noodles, too. And we were only feeding 10 people, so it wasn't a giant feast. But still, I impressed that it all finished cooking at the right time so it was all warm and fresh still! And that it all tasted good, too.

We had sausage stuffing, cranberry relish, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, broccoli casserole homemade rolls and, of course, noodles & turkey, too.

The kids enjoyed sitting at their own table.

While us bigger kids weren't far away.

Sorry for so many blurry photos... we're hoping to remedy that camera issue (which seems to be getting worse) before baby comes :)

After dinner, we had dessert!
I made pies for the first time in my life. I've tried to make pie crust before... and failed. But something inspired me to try again this year. And success!! I was brave enough to try a lattice crust on the apple pie and a braided crust on the pumpkin pie. I impressed myself ;-)  We also had eclaire cake (cause this pregnant mommy needed some chocolate) and some turkey sugar cookies that the kids "helped" me decorate the other day. Ok... they really just sat around watching and looking out for all the broken pieces of candy corn. hehe  They learned real fast what that broken ones are good for (eating!). And very quickly, they mastered the phrase "more broken one!!"  hehe

The desserts were all a hit. But the cookies were especially, with the kids.

And then there was the random appearance of a half naked child in the kitchen. LOL  He had us laughing so hard. Poor Breanna & Dan were a bit mortified. But then Traven (their 2 year old) started doing his "naked dance" and we were all rolling. One day, Traven will be mortified, too. But last night, he was content to enjoy a cookie while his daddy went to find his pants. :)

And when he thought no one was looking, another young man was off stealing turkey slices :)

And Faith?? Oh, she THOROUGHLY enjoyed her cookie. She savored that thing... and slathered that thing... all over herself. And then played peak-a-boo with us :)

What an adorable chocolate covered turkey we have ;-)

After dinner, the kids played wii.
And then later chased each other through the house, on bikes, ride-on trucks, and with a baby stroller & shopping cart. It was fun to see and listen to, but I never got a photo of their silly train.

While the little kids entertained themselves, us bigger kids played Scrabble Slam and Cranium.
And when the kids were suffiently wore out, it was time for our evening of fun to come to an end. Hopefully everyone slept well ;)
And hopefully you had a great thanksgiving too!!
