Nathan's Dedication

This morning Nathan was dedicated at our church, during Parent/Church Dedications. We believe that babies are too young to make a personal decision to follow Christ, so we follow the example of Jesus' parents. We dedicate babies instead of baptizing them. Dedication for us is more about parenting - thanking God for the blessing of our child, and promising that, with His help, we will do all we can to teach our child about Him as the Scriptures teaches us to do - so that one day our child will hopefully come to the personal decision to accept Christ as his Savior and be baptized.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9, and plenty of other passages, make it clear that parenting is one of the most important callings God gives and we are to take our responsibility serious so that our children know Him. God wants them to know what He did in Biblical times as well as all He's done in our personal lives. Our job as parents is to teach His Truth, model Christ, pray for and with our kids and make time for family worship - both formal and informally, integrated in all we do as a family. That's a high calling! It's hard enough to manage naps, bottles and diapers. But our God is awesome and He will help us as we ask. Today we promised God, our church family, and Nathan, to make our Lord central in our home and parenting, and to rely on His grace and help as we do so.
