Fairy Tale Day

Nathan's class had a fairy tale day today. The kids were asked to dress up as their favorite fairy tale character, and their lessons were going to revolve around fairy tale stories. I knew Nathan would love to participate, so I came up with an outfit for him - trying to think of a costume I could make with things we already had.... One character came to mind:

Puss N Boots

Nathan had never heard of Puss N Boots, but he liked the idea of being a kitty cat and he had orange clothes and black boots. I had (almost) everything else we needed. So I cut up an old belt to fit Nathan, put new holes in it and hot glued a small foam sword to it (so he couldn't play with it at school). I cut up a black sheet (it came with our guest bed and I'd set it aside to go to goodwill). I used it to make a cape. Then I added a jewel from my box of random craft junk. I found a hat & feather at the dollar store - the hat wasn't black, but it would do. And I attached an orange ribbon to Nathan's shorts as a cheap tail. When all was said and done, Nathan was ready to go to school as Puss N Boots:

He loved his costume - making me a proud Momma :)

Last night we let Nathan watch a little bit of Shrek 2, so he could see who he was going to dress up like. Then, after school, I let the kids watch the whole movie. Every time Puss N Boots came on, Nathan said, "Momma, I that guy!"

Jacob dropped Nathan off at school this morning and told me that no one else was dressed up from head to toe. One little kid had a crown on, another harry potter glasses; that was it. Jacob teased me that I've become "that mom." ha

But when I picked Nathan up, he had a big smile on his face. And a few kids were dressed head to toe, too - there was a Little Bo Peep, Repunzel and a few faries. And it was obvious that Nathan still loved his outfit. In fact, he refeused to take a nap without his tail still being attached to his shorts... lol  Nathan's teachers told me he was a little quiet when older grade kids were around (because they weren't dressed up), but he really came to life in class and participated well in fairy tale day. Plus, Nathan got to meet the principal today - for a good reason. His teacher took him and a couple other preschool kids to meet the principal and show off their cool costumes. He got a kick out of that. And everyone was able to correctly guess who he was, too. Yay.

So if being "that mom" means I made my kid's day, helped him break out of his shell a bit and have fun, than that's OK. I can be "that mom" :)  And I'm blessed to have kids that want me to be "that mom". At least, for the moment they do.... hehe
