Lessons from Mommyhood

Every month, on the eve of Nathan's month-o-birthday, I post some lessons I've learned from mommyhood: sometimes serious, sometimes silly. I've enjoyed it and friends enjoy reading them. So why not start my own meme??? Then you can play along, too! Not that you couldn't before... but now its official and more fun ;-)

Since the game is open to everyone, I'll post a "Lessons from Mommyhood" twice a month. I'll play on the 1st & 15ths of each month - a break from the tradition that I've had so far. If you have a blog, and are a Mommy will you join me? You can join me any day of the month. Even if your child has yet to be born, or is grown up and has a family of their own, you're still a Mommy - so join in! Here's how to play:

1. Grab the code below (highlight & copy it) and paste it in your blog. Feel free to make a comment about my blog, too :-)

2. Under the code you pasted, type in something(s) Mommyhood has recently taught you. It can be serious, silly, spiritual, insightful, embarassing, etc. It can be one thing or a dozen - its all up to you.

3. Come back here when you've published your entry. Enter your name and blog address in Mr. Linky (at the bottom of this post) to link back to your blog so everyone can read your mommyhood lessons. We'll all get to nod in agreement, laugh because we relate or squirm because we know our time will come for that, too :)

This will be fun and I look forward to reading what everyone writes!

Here are my recent Lessons from Mommyhood...

* Expect the unexpected... like 3oz of spit up down your shirt... 3 hours after the baby last ate! or the pee pee fountain that I got complacent about because it hadn't surprised me in months... until recently. And then there's the pickle & lemon that I was all too excited to give Nathan, expecting some downright hysterical facial reactions. Nope. He loved them instead. Surprise!

* Expect the disgusting.... like pureed peas flying out of baby's mouth. They inevitably land in mine! Then there's the volcanic spit-up that comes... while he's soaring above my face like an airplane! I'll give you one guess where it usually lands. (How is it that I never learn?) Then there's the other end of the baby... I won't even start about that!

* Cats are fast learners. They now run when the whisker pulling, tail yanking, drool coating monster Nathan enters the room. I secretly can't wait for the day he decides to give one a bath... in the toilet! Or spray-paints one green, like my brother did when he was little (and got in trouble for, rightfully so). I know part of me will laugh at those times.

* I am slowly morphing into the mushy mommy that I thought I'd never be... soon Nathan will be crawling... and that means he'll move up to the crawlers nursery. That's so sad! I can just begin to see the heartbreak his first day of kindergarten will cause me one day!

* And I've discovered - through experience - that there really is a reason for those little seat belts on shopping carts... and a reason plastic bags have a warning about not being a toy for children under 3... and a reason my mom always said "make sure you wash behind your ears." But I still have yet to understand the purpose of baby oil or how it is that over the last 6 1/2 months, my ears have become more sensitive to Nathan's cries at 2am and Jacob's ears have become more desensitized... hmm...

* Time flies. I know I say it every month. But I really have to find a better way to not just cherish the moments I have with Nathan now, but make the most of them - for his sake and also for the sake of the Kingdom. The end of the day comes and I often think "what did I do today that will make a significant or eternal impact?"... I usually come up short. I need to be purposefully finding ways that I can best seize the moments I'm given to make a difference in the Kingdom. That's something I pray God helps show me soon.

Now what are your recent lessons? Share them with us all!
