Cow Appreciation Day

Last Friday, July 9th, was an unofficial national holiday - Cow Appreciation Day! And in honor of such a holiday, Chick-Fil-A offered free meals to anyone dressed as a cow. Since Cow Appreciation Day happened to fall on another very special day - Nathan's birthday - we simply had to participate :)

I didn't tell Jacob what the plans were. Purposefully. I knew he'd think it was silly and not want to play along. So, we simply made his costume for him while he was at work. hehehe

Jacob came home Friday evening, hungry. He went straight to the kitchen to find out why he couldn't smell dinner cooking and/or to steal something to eat. He asked what was for dinner as he hurried over to the oven. I just smiled. Mischieviously. And pointed to the chair that had our costumes laying on it. He rolled his eyes and groaned...

He knew what Cow Appreciation Day was - the night before I'd told him he could get free lunch if he dressed as a cow . He replied that, although it was casual day at work, it wasn't that casual. So he knew exactly what I was up to when he saw the black spots and masks!

While he thought about participating with us, I showed him our sandwich-board signs. He rolled his eyes at his, mine & Nathan's. But Faith's sign caused a smile to crack through - and he was sold! Well, at least enough to come with us! (You can see our signs in the photos below.)

So we all dressed up and headed out. As we pulled into the restaurant's parking lot, I started to feel embarassed - and we hadn't even stepped out of the van yet! No one else was dressed up. We were really going to look like goof-balls... Guess it was a good thing that no one knows us in this town - yet!

But as soon as we got out of the car, a group of people stopped us - laughing and smiling because of our children. They asked permission to take photos of the kids with their cell phones (THANK YOU for people who ask permission!!). And then they kindly took a group photo of our family for us.

Nathan & Daddy refused to wear their cow masks. But eventually we convinced Nathan to try it on long enough for a photo! Jacob could learn a thing or two from his mask-wearing kids ;-) then again... he did humor me enough to allow me to dress him in black spots and a tail!

As soon as we went inside the restaurant, other dressed-up families joined us. Turns out, there were lots of other people willing to humiliate themselves for free Chick-Fil-A, too! And we had so much fun with it. Ok, I had fun with it... Jacob endured it. Nathan wondered what was happening the whole time. And Faith just enjoyed her fluffy hat and a few french fries.

We had a yummy meal and af ew good laughs - many at our own expense. Then after dinner, it was time to head home. For Birthday brownies!

See, I told you we had tails. It was part of the deal - if just your top was decorated, you only got a free sandwich. If you had a tail & spots on your feet, you got fries & a drink, too. Oh what we'll do for waffle fries. hehehehe

It was such a fun and silly family night out. And the best part - a free night out! A big THANK YOU to Chick-Fil-A for having food that is so yummy. that we're willing to dress up silly in public to enjoy it :)

Or as they say down here in San Antonio, where sometimes I think
Spanish is spoken more than English, MOO-chas Gracias!
